  • Please make an attempt to use the resources at this site to solve your problems. If it is obvious that you have not even looked in the FAQs, you will be (reasonably) politely directed to do so. I won't ignore pleas for help but doing some research first will result in a much better chance of useful assistance.

  • In particular, if you have a consumer electronics repair question for a specific model of something, ask it on the USENET newsgroup sci.electronics.repair (see below if you don't know what this means) - I DO NOT have access to service manuals or schematics. You are wasting your time and mine asking me about R342 for a Hypertron model XQR143 because I don't have a clue about it. :)

  • While I welcome laser related questions (and contributions of all types), there is an excellent chance that most of your basic questions (and a whole lot more) are already addressed in Sam's Laser FAQ.

  • I almost NEVER send email attachments and then only if I specifically notify the recipient beforehand. If you receive a message supposedly from one of my addresses with any sort of attachment and no prior approval, it is bogus and possibly a virus. Someone's address book has my address and their computer is now infected. Send me the complete headers and I'll attempt to check it out, or just delete it.

  • My emails are ALWAYS sent as plain text. If you receive an email supposedly from me in HTML or with some sort of coding, it's also bogus.

  • I don't use ICQ, Instant Messenger, On-Line Chat, or anything similar or I'd never get anything productive accomplished. Sorry, email via the Feedback Form will have to do. My apologies for not including an actual email address but the volume of SPAM has finally become unbearable.

  • The Feedback Form is the ONLY reliable way to make initial contact. Don't expect me to reply to a snail mail letter especially if I have to provide the return postage! :)

  • Having said all that, I do generally try to answer every email I receive which doesn't appear to be SPAM. My reply will include a valid email address so there will be no need to use the Feedback Form more than once unless you really want to! It will be the "Reply-To" address, which is what must be used or else the reply well end up in the bit bucket. If you have asked a serious question and receive no reply from me within a day or two, the most likely reason is that your return address is incorrect or your SPAM filters are being overenthusiastic about deleting what they think is junk email. It's also possible that my SPAM filter has deleted it by accident. Try resending it with a different reply address.

    Once you get a response and want to reply to it, please turn off HTML in your email program and use "plain text" mode. A Web search will turn up detailed instructions for doing this (and reasons why it is generally a good idea).

  I know it's called the "Feedback Form" but you can use it for other stuff. However, note that a valid email address (NOT anonymous) must be provided if a reply is expected! My computer can't read minds and my crystal ball is still out for repairs. :)

  We *used* to have an email page where folks who, for whatever reason, couldn't use the absolutely fabulous Feedback Form, could *still* contact us via email. That was *then*, this is *now*.

  The automated email gathering folks should be marched out in front of some nice thick wall and executed - Saddam Hussain-style.

  Let's just say that 30 messages every day, each about 200 kB, will kick the wind out of any email account. It did for Sam and me. Sorry.

  We have the finest and most complete gallery of viruses and "I want to be your friend" this side of the Miissiissiippii.... :-)
