Newport NL-1 Stabilized Helium-Neon Laser (Gallery)
This is a dual polarized mode stabilized HeNe laser from
Newport and is
derived directly from the Laseangle RB-1 but it no longer looks like
someone's science fair project. :) As far as I know, the NL-1 was
the only stabilized laser ever sold by Newport that
was actually manufactured by them. (Newport currently lists the REO SHL
but at most, they put the Newport logo on it, if that.)

View 02 - Front closeup view. It's basically a plate with a hole.
There was a cap on a chain that could be popped into the hole to serce
as a shutter, but that has somehow disappeared.

The cylinderical housing contains
a Polarizing Beam-Splitter (PBS) that samples one of the polarized modes
(P-polarized) and blocks it from exiting the laser. There is also a
~10 percent 45 degree mirror that samples the other polarized mode
(S-polarized). The photodiodes are mounted under the copper block.
